EPAC96 Social Programme
The following excursions, prepared especially for EPAC'96, will be accompanied by English-speaking Guides. Coaches will depart from the Gran Sitges Hotel Main Entrance at the time stated for each excursion. Excursions will only take place with a minimum of 25 participants. Excursions will be cancelled and the amount paid refunded if this figure is not reached for any of the excursions.
The Girona, Figueres and Dali Museum Tour (all day with lunch included).
Coach will
leave the Hotel Gran Sitges at 09h30 and return at approximately 17h30.
Girona, capital of the province, is located about 100 kms north of Barcelona. Besides being an attractive shopping centre, Girona is well known for its monumental ancient quarter. The chief buildings to be noted are the Church of Sant Pere de Galligans with the adjoining 12th century cloister which form an outstanding romanesque ensemble, the Archaeological Museum, the 12th century Arab Baths, the Jewish quarter and the Cathedral, which is the world's widest Gothic temple, all part of the beautiful Girona heritage. A visit to the treasure of the Cathedral which holds the 11th century "Tapestry of the Creation" and the 10th century "Book of Revelations" will never be forgotten.
Figueres and Dali Museum, Figureres, capital city of the Empordan region, is located 37 kms north of Girona. The world famous Theatre-Museum of Salvador Dali, his works and the original building, the so-called Torre Galatea, can be admired in this pleasant and hospitable city.
The Complete Barcelona City Tour (all day with lunch included).
Coach will leave at 09h30 and return at approximately 17h30.
The tour starts with a visit to the Chapel of Saint Lucia, the Cathedral and its Cloisters, and the Plaça del Rei (King's Square) a beautiful precinct surrounded by Gothic buildings and crowned by the facade of the Royal Palace with its high balcony, a genuine "skyscraper" dating from the 16th century. From the King's Square the tour continues to the Montjuic Mountain where, weather permitting, it is possible to take the cable car (or the same coach) to the top of the mountain to take in the panoramic view of the city. The tour includes a visit to the Olympic ring and the Pueblo Espanyol (Spanish Village). Also included is the world-famous Church of the Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) the unfinished masterpiece of Gaudi, and the Picasso Museum.
The Cava Region Tour (half day).
Coach will leave at 16h00 and return at approximately 20h00.
The Penedès Region is one of the most beautiful and interesting regions in Catalonia, home of the Catalan Cava (sparkling champagne-type wine), all major cava producers in the Country are found here: Codorniu, Freixenet, Raventos, etc. The tour includes the village of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, the capital of the Cava, the plant and cellars of a local producer with the opportunity of tasting Cava. Also included in the tour is Vilafranca del Penedès, a rich and prosperous village of the Penedès Region boasting a famous Wine Museum.
The Modernist Barcelona of Gaudi City Tour (half day).
Coach will leave at 16h00 and return at approximately 20h00.
From the Passeig de Gràcia with a view of the Batlle house, the tour will continue to the Milà house, best known as "La Pedrera" (the stone-quarry), and go on to the north part of Barcelona to visit the Güell Park, declared by Unesco as an artistic monument and patrimony of humanity. Also included is a tour of the Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) the unfinished masterpiece of Gaudi.
