The cocktail aims to provide personal contacts between delegates and exhibitors starting from the very first day of the conference.

"Heuriger" is the Viennese word for the wine from the latest harvest and for the taverns in which it is served. Experience a memorable evening in one of the typical Heurigen villages in Vienna's outskirts. Enjoy a few hours in a warm informal atmosphere with light wine and excellent food (different meat and chicken, salad, apple strudel).
CULTURAL EVENTS, TOURS AND EXCURSIONS: GENERALAustropa Interconvention is organizing guided tours before, during and after the conference. Each sightseeing tour requires a minimum number of 25 participants. Austropa Interconvention reserves the right to cancel tours before the beginning of the congress, should the minimum number not be reached. Tours are accompanied by English speaking guides and are subject to change!
All tours start and end at the Austria Center Vienna if not stated otherwise. If you wish to participate in any of the tours listed below, please fill in the appropriate space when completing the Web Accommodation and Excursions Form or on the reservation form mailed with the First Announcement.
Full payment in advance is necessary for optional programmes. On receipt of your payment, you will be sent a confirmation of your booking. Vouchers and invoice will be handed to you at the travel desk at the conference centre.
Cancellation of booked tours must be addressed in writing to Austropa Interconvention. Cancellation will be free of charge before 14 June 2000. After this date, 50% cancellation fee has to be charged. No refund can be made after 23 June 2000. If a trip is cancelled by the conference office, the charge paid will be reimbursed in full.

Excursion "Impressions of the Burgenland"
Excursion to Burgenland, the eastern-most and youngest federal state of Austria, bordering Hungary, from which state this region has taken many influences that still can be experienced in local tradition, food and folklore music.
Visit the baroque Esterhazy Castle built by Carlo Carlone in Eisenstadt, the small capital city of Burgenland where Joseph Haydn lived and was buried. Get acquainted with Rust, a city of wine and storks, situated on lake Neusiedl, the biggest steppe lake of Europe and a national bird sanctuary. Boat trip on the lake and wine tasting at a wine grower's are planned.
Lunch (Pannonian food) with original gipsy music.
Return to the Austria Center within registration hours so that it will be possible to pick up the conference documents.

Excursion "Kahlenberg - Klosterneuburg"

On the way to the Danube the bus travels through the northeastern part of the city offering a magnificent view of the hills surrounding Vienna, the so called "Wienerwald". Via the scenic route and passing through some well-known Heurigen villages, you reach the Kahlenberg. This lookout offers a good view of the entire city. The bus tour continues to Klosterneuburg, the first residence of the Babenberg family in the Vienna area during early medieval times. The most prominent site to visit is the Abbey of the Augustinian Friars, founded before 1108. The unique romanesque Verdun Altar with its 51 enamelled tablets by Nikolaus von Werden, dated 1181, is the most valuable piece of art in the abbey.

Excursion to the Vienna Museum of Technology
Departure 09.00 from the Opera House, main entrance
After general renovation, one of the oldest museums of technology presents its exhibits in many fields of technology and physics in an up to date way. Among its highlights are the first "Elektromobil" of 1900 by Lohner-Porsche, the Etrich-Taube etc., and the unique steam-engine gallery as well as basic inventions by Austrian geniuses like the first typewriter and sewing machine.
In the field of mining a complete coal mine of 1915 is on display.
Bus transfer to the museum, after an overview of the museum given by a guide, feel free to stay as long as you like. No return transfer into the city centre.
City Tour: "Historic Vienna" including a visit to the Schönbrunn Palace
Departure 14.00 from the conference centre, duration approx. 3.5 hours
This tour provides an overall view of the city and also leads to some prominent sights. Driving along the Ringstraße, a circular boulevard of 4 kilometers, which was built during mid last century, one can see many impressive buildings, such as the State Opera, the Burgtheater, various museums, the Parliament, the City Hall and the University.
The highlight of the tour is the visit to the Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Austrian Emperors.
Wednesday, 28 June 2000 The Opera House backstage, The Return of the Third Man

August von Siccardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll were the architects of the so called "k.k. Court Opera House" from 1861 to 1869. With 300 performances virtually every night from 1 September to 30 June the Vienna State Opera House is one of the most influential opera houses in the world.
In contrast to this historical building join a journey into the unknown and see Vienna from below. A world of myths and stories is yours to discover. What starts off as a view into Vienna's sewer system soon turns out to be a first-rate adventure: the return of the Third Man. Hold your breath as you take in the incredible scenes before you. Blurred outlines, mysterious voices and ear-piercing shots at every turn of your tour.
Please note: Low heels and warm clothing are recommended. Persons suffering from heart trouble or claustrophobia are advised not to participate. Special effects like smoke, loud sound projection, and sudden flashes may cause medical problems for some people.
In the Footsteps of Great Musicians
Departure 09.00 from the conference centre, duration approx. 3 hours
This tour takes you to various memorial sites of famous musicians, who lived and worked in Vienna: Franz Schuberts's birthplace and museum at Nussdorferstraße and the Beethoven's Memorial in Heiligenstadt, Probusgasse No. 6, where he wrote the Heiligenstädter Testament. Proceeding along the small Danube one arrives at the St. Marx Cemetery, a Biedermeier park with Mozarts' tomb. Returning to the centre of Vienna one passes the Waisenhauskirche, where the 12 year old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed and conducted a celebration mass for the consecration of the church in 1768.

Excursion to the Vienna Woods - Heiligenkreuz

This tour to the southern Vienna Woods, a lovely green area, passes through Mödling, known for having been the residence of Beethoven, Schubert, Grillparzer and others. The main attraction en-route is the Cistercian Abbey at Heiligenkreuz, founded 1135/36 by Leopold III of Babenberg. The excursion continues driving by the Carmelite Convent in Mayerling, which used to be the hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolph von Habsburg, and the Helenental to Baden, the spa city, where we take a walk through the historical centre. On the way back to Vienna we drive through Gumpoldskirchen, a well-known wine-producing area.

Meeting point: 14.30 Schwedenplatz, in front of McDonald's, duration of the tour approx. 2 hours
During this walk guests will visit parts of "Old Vienna" that cannot be reached by bus. Walking through the Jewish quarter one passes the oldest church of Vienna, the Ruprechtskirche, said to be founded in 740 and officially mentioned for the first time in 1161. Medieval narrow streets lead to Saint Stephen's Cathedral where one can explore its numerous cultural and artistic sights. Close by is the "House of Figaro", where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived when he composed the opera "The Marriage of Figaro".

Excursion to the Wachau, the Romantic Danube Valley

In the charming countryside along the Danube to the west of Vienna visitors may find many monuments as well as vineries with ancient tradition.The baroque Benedictine Monastery of Melk in its unique splendour, situated on a rock overlooking the Danube, is one of Austria's greatest sights. Discover the old city of Krems with its well maintained medieval look - more than 1000 years old. Austrian lunch at a country inn en-route and short boat ride on the Danube river with a marvellous view of this picturesque landscape complete the tour.
PRE- AND POST-CONFERENCE PROGRAMMEExcursion to Salzburg - The City of Mozart
Departure Saturday 24 June, 08.00, tour ends on Sunday, 25 June approx. 18.00
This tour will bring you to Salzburg, the native town of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and its lovely mountainous surroundings. You will get acquainted with some of the most important sights of this old episcopal town in the course of a city tour and a guided walk through the city.
You will visit the fortress "Hohensalzburg", from where you get a terrific view of the "town of Mozart", the river Salzach and the beautiful landscape surrounding Salzburg. Further you will see Mozart's place of birth in the well-known shopping street "Getreidegasse", the famous Cathedral of Salzburg, as well as beautiful churches such as the venerable abbey of St. Peter.
The second day features a drive via Fuschl through the lovely lake district called Salzkammergut with a stop at the imperial spa Bad Ischl.

Excursion to Graz - The Renaissance City
Departure: Saturday 1 July, 08.00, tour ends on Sunday, 2 July approx. 18.00
Graz is the province capital of Styria and a former residence of the Habsburgs and the Austrian emperors. You are sure to be charmed by its southern European flair. The tour takes you to romantic squares and inner courtyards in the Old Town, the largest self-contained historical centre of any city in Europe. The extensive touring programme includes a visit to the renaissance style Landhouse, set of the provincial government, the Arsenal (the largest collection of historical weapons in the world, 350 years old), the Mausoleum of Ferdinand II and the Gothic Cathedral. A visit is also made to the Schlossberg rising above the Old Town and to the Clocktower located there, the major landmark of the city.
The second day of the tour features a visit to the famous stud farm in Piber to learn all about the breeding and the training of the Lipizzaner horses. We will also visit the nearby parish church of Bärnbach, which the internationally known Austrian painter F. Hundertwasser decorated in his inimitable colourful style.
Return to Vienna via Stübing, Alpl and the Semmering, once a fashionable mountain resort for celebrities.
